Remarkably good design Jan 10, 2012
By Dr. Allen K. Ream
"Sam"
I've taught good design for years; one of my examples is soap dishes. I now have quite a collection.
The design of this dish is remarkable in its simplicity and effectiveness. The dish is simple and unobtrusive. The small round posts on which the wet soap rests are high enough to allow the soap to dry (because air can easily circulate underneath, and the dish is larger than the bar, allowing air to enter from all sides). They are flat on top and large enough in diameter, so that wet soap isn't rubbed off when the soap bar is deposited or removed. Yet the posts are small enough that wet soap trapped between the posts and the soap bar dries as well. The base is not perforated, so that soapy water can't travel to the counter underneath the dish before drying and leaving soap residue. If one shakes the bar once, after washing, before placing it in the soap dish, it can be days before even a drop of dried soap residue is seen in the dish. The dish is large enough to accommodate any bar, including bath sizes, short of a laundry bar.
When soap does adhere to the dish, it is easy to remove; soap doesn't adhere well to the material from which the dish is made. Yet this material is sticky (and the feet smooth) enough that the dish doesn't slide easily across the counter. Since it's a soft plastic, it won't break if dropped. Because it is transparent, any cleaning needs are easily observed; dirt can't hide.
Good designs may appear simple, but rarely are; this item is an excellent example. Perhaps the only competing dish which dries soap almost as effectively is the Alessi Unicci, which costs $74 at Amazon.
The criticism, concerning high shipping cost, is no longer significant, since Amazon now offers this item under the Prime program.
Just what I was looking for Dec 13, 2010
By Miss M. This was the soap dish I've been looking for for ages. I was pleased to have found it on Amazon via Farm & Home Supply Center for a sort of reasonable price. However, at the time of purchase I did not know the shipping cost would be more than double than the price of the item itself. If I had know that I probably would've kept looking elsewhere. More than likely this will be the last time I purchase anything from this company
