Pinzon Chamonix Full/Queen Medium Warmth White Goose Down Comforter

Enjoy a great night's sleep with a Pinzon luxury comforter just right for your needs. This Chamonix Medium Warmth Goose Down comforter, with 40 total ounces of goose down, offers a medium level of warmth for year-round comfort. Boasting a fill power of 650, the comforter offers a premium down value. Fill power indicates how many cubic inches of space an ounce of down will occupy, and anything at the 600 level is considered in the industry to be excellent. The higher the fill power, the larger and stronger the clusters of down. Large clusters provide superior insulation, breathe better, and last much longer than smaller, fragile down clusters used in many lower quality comforters.

Full/Queen Comforter Buying Guide

The Chamonix comforter is made with a 6-inch perimeter border framing a centered, 16-inch-baffle-box design. Unlike comforters with regular baffle box construction, which can experience a shifting of the down fill, Pinzon's Chamonix comforter utilizes the patented PermaBaffle shiftless construction. It's the only patented method to construct baffle box comforters that will not permit filling to shift, even after washing. To protect the filling in the frame around the baffle boxes, the comforter has mitered corners. The end result is that you can enjoy the aesthetics of a framed comforter without compromising the utility offered by PermaBaffle.

While the Chamonix comforter is cherished for its utility, it's admired for its good looks. The shell features an attractive 5-inch vertical cabana stripe pattern with bold color. Boasting a 440 thread count in a Dobby weave, the shell is made from Tencel Cotton, renowned for its softness, durability, moisture absorption, and wrinkle-resistance. Safe to clean at home in the washer and dryer, Pinzon's Chamonix goose down comforter may also safely be dry cleaned. The full/queen-sized Chamonix comforter measures 90 by 96 inches, and it's also available in twin, king, and oversized king sizes.

Fabric Definition

Tencel Cotton: Far stronger than cotton alone, Tencel is durable, comfortable, wrinkle-resistant, machine washable, has little elasticity, and is very soft. In addition, it has good moisture absorption, and good static- and heat-resistance. Tencel Cotton fabric is a blend of the cotton fiber with the trademarked, man-made Tencel fiber, uniting the good qualities of each. Like rayon, Tencel is made from cellulose derived naturally from dissolved wood pulp. Unlike rayon, Tencel is processed without producing large amounts of sulfurous waste, sometimes leading it to be labeled "low impact". Tencel producers use a closed-loop chemical process in which its solvent can be filtered and reused. Tencel fibers can be used alone or blended with cotton, flax, polyester, wool, and spandex. Tencel fibers can be knitted or woven into a wide range of fabrics, including crepes, chambrays, poplins, and twills. Tencel fibers produce "fibrillation," the forming of tiny hairs, which can give some Tencel fabrics a soft, peach-fuzz texture.

3NO WARRANTY otherwise not bad  Oct 12, 2009
By lightstream
I was amazed to discover, after buying this and two other Pinzon bedding products, that they have no warranty. Pinzon is a brand name licensed to Amazon and the products are sourced from various manufacturers, the comforters come from Downlite who looks like a very reputable manufacturer. I wrote to Amazon asking why there was no warranty information included in the package and they wrote back saying there is no warranty, only a 30-day refund. Comforters of this quality generally come with a 10-15 year warranty.

I was also a bit dismayed at the total lack of information included with the products. They all have the same generic packaging, a B&W card which has Pinzn's name and Amazon's 30-day refund policy but nothing else, not even a model number or an indication what is inside. There is a model designation on the back of the packaging on the UPC tag.

The chart shown on each of the Pinzon comforter pages and the heading for the less expensive down comforter reads "Pyrenees White Goose Down Comforter". I think the word Pyrenees is only a model designation and does not refer to the quality of the down. In my research I found a site that extolled Pyrenees down as one of the finest. I assumed that was what these comforters were made from and only realized my mistake after ordering one. It's my own fault for being too overwhelmed with info and missing some obvious stuff - but also a bit deceptive of Amazon. I wonder what kind of down is used in these, Chinese down is supposedly only capable of 550 fill power so it must be something else.

Aside from all that the comforter is very nice. I could say a lot about it but I'm still trying to decide if I want to keep a long term purchase like a comforter with no warranty. I'm giving this three stars because of Amazon's lack of faith in their own product and the possibly unintentionally deceptive Pyrenees down reference. I like Amazon very much and don't want to disparage them or their products but in this case I think it's unacceptable to source a product from a manufacturer like Downlite and not include a warranty. Every other vendor I checked out that has their comforters OEM'd by Downlite offers a warranty, most of them at least 10 years.

When I inquired about the warranty I asked a couple other questions. Amazon replied they couldn't help me and gave me an email address to ask Pinzon my questions. Sending my request to Pinzon's email resulted in an auto response email from Amazon directing me to their help page, which is where I had started. I could not get any information about this comforter from Amazon or Pinzon except that it has no warranty. I think that should be disclosed on the Amazon website's product page - "30-day refund only".

If I keep it (it is very nice) I'll update this review.

update: I got an email from an Executive Customer Relations representative:

"Pinzon received your e-mail and asked me to respond.

They currently don't offer an extended warranty for their products; however, the items are covered by our 30-day refund policy. You can return new, unopened items sold and fulfilled by Amazon.com within 30 days of delivery for a full refund. Items should be returned in their original product packaging."

I responded that you can't offer an extended warranty if you don't already have a warranty to extend. I also said that Amazon's 30-day return policy should not be presented as a warranty, it's a return policy that is applied to all products Amazon sells.

It makes me nervous to own a product this expensive that I expect to last a long time. Comforters can develop problems arising from manufacturing years down the road, like stitching coming undone, down clumping, baffle boxes opening up or a lot of other things that might not surface for a year or longer.

All that being said I'm probably going to keep the comforter. I like the product and I've already opened it and have used it. I should have researched the warranty before purchasing it. Amazon is on the spot to provide the appropriate level of after sale support, no matter what they deny the customer at the time of purchase. In the future I won't take it for granted that what appear to be quality products come with quality assurances.

Edited to add: I spent a lot of time talking about the warranty but not much about the comforter. One of the reasons I bought this one was because it said it was machine washable. I wouldn't wash a down comforter unless something drastic happened but I wanted to know it was possible, just in case. Something drastic happened. One of our cats relieved himself on the comforter in the middle of the night. The weave of the fabric was so tight the urine didn't make it through the bottom side of the duvet cover - there was a silver dollar sized wet spot on the opposite side of the comforter. We soaked the area, used an enzyme odor killer on the spot and then washed it in our washing machine. I gave it two rinses. I hadn't read the instructions on washing it and used the HE type detergent instead of the dish soap they say to use. It worked perfectly and drying it didn't harm it at all. We put some tennis balls in the dryer with it and turned it frequently to get the wetter parts on the outside as it tumbled.

Amazingly there is absolutely no odor from the cat or the washing/drying. The spot where we treated it with enzymes seemed to have lost its loft and overall it seemed a bit flatter but after a few days of fluffing it the whole comforter has come back to a like new condition.

I am very happy with this purchase. It keeps us warm when it's freezing outside. We keep our thermostat at 55 while we sleep and the coldest part of the house is our bedroom. The comforter is light, very comfortable and toasty warm. It fluffs up nicely and keeps its loft. It has a reassuring high quality feel and now, having dealt with a disaster and seeing it come out so well, I'm not worried about its durability.

However, I still think it should have a warranty.

Our cat got a new bed of his own in another room...

5High Fill Power and Down Amount is PERFECT!  Feb 01, 2008
By Amber R. Garnett
Two reasons why I bought this duvet: high fill power (650+) and the amount of down (28 seems low but its better, there is minimum 75% white goose down). I did a lot of research and compared "the best on the market"- THIS DUVET IS A STEAL! Its medium weight is just right, the fluffing action is extreme, keeps me WARM+, and is very well constructed with quality materials. My boyfriend has a Martha Stewart 5 star but we know nothing and cannot find any information about it whereas this duvet comes with all the details and is by far much better all around especially in price. Needless to say he wants it. It arrived in three business days from three states away. This is the fourth duvet I have tried in a month and I am keeping it! Try it, if you do not like it send it back (but you'll love it:)

5Good Comforter  Feb 12, 2009
By afpilot130
I did a lot of research on comforters and chose this comforter for several reasons:
This was decently priced ($199.99)
Great size, the King size is more than enough for my King bed
Good quality: fill power, construction, materials (from reading the description and Amazon.com reviews)

I liked the overall description of the comforter on the Amazon.com website and customer reviews.

I received the comforter with no issues, no discoloration or ripped material. The quality is just what I expected. It is in excellent condition, excellent quality, very soft, and light. The comforter warms up very quickly, which is very nice. This comforter fulfilled all of my expectations.

I want to say this comforter will do well in a home that is kept in the low 60's. I keep my house at 70 degrees and I still would have to kick the covers off occasionally because it gets too warm. I wish the manufacturer would define "medium warmth" in terms of degrees. That would have given me a better idea of the warmth level. "Medium warmth" is a too subjective description.

One disadvantage of owning this King size comforter (or the Oversized King) is finding the right size duvet cover. I had a hard time finding a good duvet cover this size, and even then, the cover is about 2 inches larger all around. I have not found a duvet cover that could fit the Oversized King (I didn't really look that hard either since I wasn't buying that size).

This is my first down comforter and I am very pleased. Of the many blankets/comforters I have owned, this is by far the best, especially for the price. I really didn't want to shell out $500-$1000 for down and I'm glad this one came along in my searches. This is definitely not a cheaply made comforter. The old adage "You get what you pay for" doesn't apply to this product. You get an excellent quality comforter at an unbelievable price. Just be advised that if you plan on getting a duvet cover (king/oversized king), you maybe searching for awhile.

5Great medium warmth duvet. Great quality. No complaints.  Dec 10, 2008
By A. Hamel "AH"
I bought this for my daughter. She needed something really fluffy and cozy, yet not too hot. I researched the available products carefully, read many reviews, and finally decided on this one. I am very happy and have no regrets. Here are my observations:
- It is medium warmth, as stated.
- The cover is very good; many duvets have an issue with tiny feathers releasing anytime you try to fluff them. I did not find it translucent, or have no grey feather in mine. I have purchased a duvet cover.
- It is big. Falls nicely over the sides of a twin bed.

3Translucent, thin cover  Feb 22, 2008
By Prism
I was so excited to receive this comforter based on all the great reviews. However, I was disappointed. It arrived with the package soiled. The "5 inch vertical cabana stripe" is barely visible. The worse part for me is the cotton shell. While very soft, is also very thin and practically translucent. I could see the down inside and also the black or grey pieces of feather/down all throughout the comforter. They looked like little grey spot stains all over the comforter.

Some pros:

* It is very long.
* I didn't see down flying everywhere when I took it out of the bag.
* Nice and fluffy. There is alot of down in there. Too bad there's a bunch of grey pieces, too.
